God’s promise to Abraham was never dependent on perfect people or perfect circumstances—it rested on the faithfulness of God. From Abraham’s call, through years of waiting, and into Joseph’s suffering in Egypt, God continued making a way for His purpose. The same promise ultimately points beyond one family to God’s plan to bring blessing, salvation, and restored fellowship to the world.

The Bible begins with a perfect world where humanity lives in fellowship with God, but sin quickly fractures that design and spreads through every part of human life. Genesis 1–11 shows both the seriousness of sin and the justice of God, while also revealing something just as important: God does not abandon His purpose. Human failure does not get the final word, because the story of God is still moving forward.

Jehovah Jireh means “The Lord Will Provide,” and Genesis 22 shows us exactly what that looks like. Through Abraham’s obedience and God’s timely intervention, we’re reminded that God provides guidance, courage, and solutions even when the path feels unbearable. Ultimately, this story points us to Jesus — the greatest provision of all.

This Advent, we begin our series He Shall Be Called by exploring one of God’s most comforting names: El Roi—the God Who Sees. In Hagar’s story from Genesis 16, we meet a God who seeks out the hurting, hears their affliction, and responds with compassion. This message reminds us that no matter how unseen or overwhelmed we may feel, God’s gaze is fixed on us with love and care.
