Look Again

Look Again

Life has a way of narrowing our focus. When hardship comes, it's easy to see only the diagnosis, the disappointment, the conflict, or the uncertainty. Yet just as an image can contain details that aren't obvious at first glance, our lives often contain truths that are present even when we don't immediately recognize them. Hebrews 11:32–12:2 invites us to look again.

1. Look Backward — Remember the Faithful

Faith Is Bigger Than One Kind of Outcome

Hebrews 11 closes by rapidly recounting the lives of many faithful men and women. Some experienced incredible victories. Through faith they conquered kingdoms, administered justice, received promises, shut the mouths of lions, escaped death, gained strength in weakness, and saw miraculous deliverance.

But the story doesn't stop there.

The same chapter also speaks of believers who were tortured, mocked, imprisoned, stoned, killed, and forced to live as fugitives. Some were rescued, while others suffered greatly. Yet Scripture places both groups side by side under the same heading: people of faith.

Faith is not measured by receiving the outcome we hoped for.

Faith is measured by continuing to trust God regardless of the outcome.

Trusting God Through Every Season

Many people assume that genuine faith guarantees favorable circumstances. Hebrews teaches something deeper.

Sometimes faith experiences miraculous deliverance.

Sometimes faith walks faithfully through suffering.

Sometimes prayers are answered exactly as we hoped.

Sometimes faith continues praying while waiting.

God's faithfulness is not determined by our immediate circumstances. His promises are certain, His purposes continue unfolding, and His work is never abandoned even when the outcome looks different than expected.

God's Greater Plan

Hebrews concludes by reminding us that these Old Testament believers did not receive the complete fulfillment of God's ultimate promise during their lifetime.

They lived by faith while anticipating something greater.

Because Jesus has come, believers today enjoy blessings they had only anticipated. Yet all believers—from every generation—will one day experience God's completed work together.

Looking backward reminds us that generations before us trusted God with less revelation than we possess today. Their lives encourage us to remain faithful regardless of what our present circumstances look like.

2. Look Inward — Remove What Hinders

A Great Cloud of Witnesses

Hebrews 12 begins by describing believers as being surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.

These witnesses are not primarily spectators watching our lives from heaven.

Their lives testify that God is faithful.

Abraham bears witness.

Moses bears witness.

Rahab bears witness.

The prophets bear witness.

The martyrs bear witness.

Every life recorded in Hebrews 11 points to the same conclusion:

God can be trusted.

Lay Aside Every Weight

Because of their testimony, believers are called to lay aside every weight.

Not every weight is necessarily sinful.

Some things simply slow spiritual growth.

Activities, hobbies, entertainment, work, social media, or endless distractions may not always be wrong in themselves, but they can become obstacles that keep us from pursuing Christ wholeheartedly.

A helpful question isn't simply:

"Is this sinful?"

A better question is:

"What is this doing to my soul?"

Does it help cultivate love for Christ?

Does it increase generosity?

Does it strengthen holiness?

Does it make us more attentive to God?

Or is it simply occupying space that could be used for something better?

Lay Aside Sin

The author also addresses sin directly.

Sin clings tightly and slows spiritual progress.

Whether it's anger, gossip, unhealthy relationships, temptation, or hidden habits, anything that draws us away from Christ must be confessed and abandoned.

The faithful examples of Hebrews 11 sacrificed much to follow God.

Followers of Christ today are called to remove whatever keeps them from running faithfully.

3. Look Upward — Run With Endurance

The Christian Life Is a Marathon

The Christian life is not about starting well alone.

It is about finishing well.

Hebrews calls believers to run the race with endurance.

When the journey becomes difficult, quitting often appears reasonable.

Waiting becomes exhausting.

Obedience becomes costly.

Faithfulness can feel lonely.

Yet Scripture urges believers to keep running.

Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

Endurance is not found through determination alone.

It comes by fixing our eyes on Jesus.

He is the founder and perfecter of our faith.

Jesus is not simply another example among many.

He is the very foundation of our faith.

Everything ultimately points to Him.

Joy Beyond the Cross

Jesus endured the cross because of the joy set before Him.

The suffering itself was not joyful.

The salvation His sacrifice accomplished was.

Believers can likewise endure difficult seasons because they know God is accomplishing something greater than what they presently see.

Joy is found not because every circumstance is pleasant, but because Christ is faithful throughout the journey.

Remember That God Uses Imperfect People

The heroes listed throughout Hebrews 11 were not perfect.

Gideon struggled with fear.

Samson made destructive decisions.

David committed grievous sins.

Yet each one ultimately trusted God.

Their stories remind us that faithful people are not flawless people.

God works through imperfect men and women who continue placing their confidence in Him.

Look Again

When life becomes overwhelming, it is easy to focus only on what is immediately in front of us.

But Hebrews encourages us to look again.

Look backward and remember those who remained faithful.

Look inward and remove whatever keeps you from running well.

Look upward and fix your eyes on Jesus.

Everything needed to endure in faith has always been available through Him. Sometimes the greatest need is simply to look again.
