In 2011, the people of Pathway Church felt a calling to address the enormous need for clean water in Africa. At that time, we targeted small rural communities in Ethiopia and have since expanded our efforts into Liberia and Kenya. Over the past six years, we have established over 70 wells that now provide clean water for approximately 70,000 people! During the Christmas season of 2017, we’ll once again Give Joy to the World. Our efforts will advance the work we have begun in both Liberia and Kenya. In each location our commitment begins with providing clean water, but doesn’t stop there. The provision of water also is opening doors for the Living Water of Jesus Christ.
The small nation of Liberia on the western coast of Africa has a huge need. There is little water available for basic human needs such as drinking and cooking and the water that can be found is contaminated. Through Pathway’s involvement, that is changing. Fresh water wells will be provided in several communities to meet the need and give the people renewed hope, health and opportunity. Providing clean water is essential, but water alone is not enough. Along with the provision of water there is a need for education in proper hygiene and sanitation. Most important, there is a need in each village for the Living Water of Christ. Through a unique partnership with Living Water International in Liberia, not only will we be able to provide fresh drinking water, but also the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Since 2012, Pathway Church has been developing a global partnership in a remote Kenyan village called Orkarkar. It all began with a well provided through the generosity of the Pathway community. Prior to that time, the only water source for the Maasai people of the area was a contaminated water hole shared by cattle, sheep, goats and other animals. As a result, the people of the community were suffering from numerous water-borne illnesses, including cholera, worms, diarrhea and more. The well we have provided is reversing those deadly effects. We are committed to clean water for Orkarkar, but it doesn’t stop there. With a sustainable water source in place, our efforts have expanded to include the provision of a school and church. Our plan is to engage with this needy village over a period of years to not only offer clean water, but also a consistent gospel witness, biblical teaching, medical treatment and a school. The project is well under way and will take another vital step in February of 2018 when we will send our fourth Pathway team to minister in Orkarkar.
You can Give Joy to the World by giving the gift of clean water and more to those who do not have access to this most basic necessity. Your financial gift will go to rescue those who are dying from preventable water-related diseases and advance the work the well in Orkarkar has allowed.
Christmas is the beautiful time of year when we reflect on the gift of Jesus Christ coming to Earth. In its purest and true nature, it is a season marked by giving and selflessness. Unfortunately, in many places we have lost sight of that deepest meaning, but we can recapture it by embracing selflessness all over again. Instead of asking for a Christmas gift you probably don’t need, why not ask for a gift of water you can pass along to someone in great need? Or as a family, consider putting fewer boxes under your tree to put water into the hands of a family who is suffering without it.
And what about those hard-to-buy-for people on your list? Instead of giving something more to someone who has almost everything, why not give a gift of water, in their honor, to someone who has almost nothing? When you give a gift in honor of someone else, you can present them with a Give Joy to the World greeting card that describes the need for clean water and highlights the action you have taken to give water on their behalf.
Your gift will go to providing clean water to some of the world’s neediest people in Liberia and additional resources in Orkarkar, Kenya. Through our partnership with Living Water International and Pathway teams, not only will you be sharing in the digging of wells and community development, but also communicating the gospel with great intentionality.
